The race serves as a lead-up qualifying event to the $500,000 Thousand Guineas which is a feature event at the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

Apart from offering $200,000 in prize money, the main carrot offered by the Thousand Guineas Prelude is ballot exemption for the winner into the Thousand Guineas.
